The Spaces in Between: Exploring Transitions, Arm balances and Pranayama with Zander Winther

By bringing a meditative focus to the movements between the postures, the Vinyasa tradition teaches us to treat the journey and destination as one. In this workshop we will dive into two different but complementary transitional spaces. First, we will break down the elusive floating arm balance transitions often called “jump backs” and “jump throughs.” Learn how to build the strength and integration to perform these transitions safely with control. We will then implement the same principles to explore several of the more challenging arm balances.

We will complement this through a meditative exploration of pranayama, yogic breathing exercises. The focus will be on the space between the breaths, known as the “kumbhaka” a gentle moment of stillness. When performed in a patient and safe fashion, this breathing practice leads to a unique mental clarity described by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras.

Zander Winther

Zander found Vinyasa Yoga exactly when he needed it. Several years of working in homeless shelters and a variety of unhealthy daily habits had left him depleted and merely aiming to get through another day. Yoga was part of a reboot plan to ‘live without dead time’ and after just one Vinyasa class he committed to a daily practice. His passion for Yoga integrated long-standing connections to Vajrayana Buddhism, radical environmentalism and an academic background in philosophy. These interests are woven together in a traditional framework that draws inspiration from the powerful teachings of Shri Krishnamacharya, who helped re-establish Yoga in the modern age.

Zander is an E-RYT 200 and registered Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider, with over 1000 hours of teaching experience and over 500 hours in training. He is also a certified Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist through the Himalayan Institute and holds an MA in Philosophy. You can read more about him at zanderyoga.com.
