What a difference a week makes! No doubt if you read last week’s blog you may have been wondering if I’d ever set foot in a studio again. Well not only am I returning to the mat, I’m also now officially registered for Spring Teacher Training.
Life’s a funny thing isn’t it?
I had no inkling that YTT would ever be part of my world. Getting my life organized and resetting my internal compass was priority number one. I suppose it’s no surprise then that once that compass was pointing towards true north again I was able to see the road ahead more clearly. That road has lead me here to a place full of wellbeing, discovery, and new beginnings.
I guess what I’d like to communicate most in this post isn’t so much about what may or may not specifically happen for you on the mat. If you’ve read any of my babblings you may be coming to understand that yoga, with its focus on the power of breathing with intention enables an intense link between mind and body. It is unlike any other physical or mental ‘exercise’ you will ever do. It’s a fluid process. You meet obstacles as you practice, be they physical, mental or emotional, and you learn how to navigate accordingly (or sometimes abandon ship as I so clearly demonstrated last week). For me what’s important is returning to the mat, willing once again to explore the world inside.
Because the nature of yoga is what it is, (let’s be honest the philosophy predates written history), when you dive into the practice through the stretches, the movement, the breathing, you are changed. What seems to be happening for me and for many others who practice is a quiet transformation of being; the body changes yes, the mind too, and the combination enables a change of spirit. It’s remarkable.
I suppose my point is never rule anything out in life. The most uncomfortable moment, the most unhappy night could lead you to the most delightful flash or the most uplifting day. Life can and will surprise you if you let it. Sometimes those surprises will be most welcome, sometimes most unwelcome. The key is to keep returning to a place that renews you, that keeps you calm, and that inspires change.
I have found such place and I’m glad I’m able to share what I’m discovering with whoever is reading. And if I can go from being reluctant to share to being inspired to teach, so can you.
Elisa joined the Semperviva team as a YA at the Kits Beach location this past July. She had been working in the film and television industry here in Vancouver as a casting associate and more recently as a television script writer before deciding it was time for something new. Elisa first looked to yoga a decade ago after searching for something to compliment her athletic training and found it to be a surprising touchstone while dealing with the serious illness of a family member. She believes yoga and meditation are simple ways to find answers to life’s complicated questions.
