Surviving the Cold and Flu Season: Prevention

Every year starting in October, Dr. Peddle hears a story from her patients that repeats itself all through the winter months: “Someone in my office came to work with the flu and now everyone is getting sick”.

Sound familiar?

Want to get the upper hand on the flu this year?

Here are some tips on holistic flu prevention from Dr. Peddle ND, a Naturopathic Doctor at Elements Wellness Centre. These tips will help you fight the good fight against the cold and flu viruses this year, naturally.

  • Lifestyle
The number one rule in flu prevention is to stay home if you are sick. Your body will thank you and so will your co-workers. Wash your hands frequently with hot soapy water, rubbing them together vigorously. Stay well hydrated- this helps keep your mucus membranes moist (your 1st line of defense against bacteria and viruses) and helps to flush out your system. Women should be drinking approximately 2L of water each day and men 3L.
  • Nutrition
Eat a diet rich in brightly coloured vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats like olive oil, avocado and fish. This will give your body the nutrients it needs to fight off infection and speed healing. Avoid anything that taxes your immune or detoxification systems like sugar, fast food, caffeine, pop, alcohol and tobacco.
  • Supplements
Vitamin C helps the body to repair and heal itself and helps to inhibit inflammation, thanks to its antioxidant properties. Vitamin D has been shown to help prevent the seasonal flu in addition to being a great supplement to support bone health and mood. Vitamin D supplementation is especially important in the winter months when there is less sunshine, as the lack of sunshine results in decreased Vitamin D activation in our bodies.
  • Other Remedies
Compound homeopathics like Muco coccinum (Genestra) and Engystol (Heel) help to boost your immune system to prevent viral infections, like the cold and flu viruses. The benefit of using a compound homeopathic remedy for flu prevention is that they stimulate the immune system to offer enhanced protection against any virus, not just the cold or flu viruses. They are safe to take with conventional medicines and with other natural remedies.

For a complete flu prevention and treatment plan, and to ensure that any natural remedy is safe for you, consult with your Naturopath or complimentary health care provider.
