After a day at the office or just sitting around, Cobra yoga pose helps to remove that hunch in your back and breathe some life in to you again.
Cobra pose is named such because of its resemblance to a snake. By bending your back, the position targets and works the whole torso; perfect for whipping your back posture into shape! You definitely will feel a bit taller from doing this yoga pose.
1) The starting position. Begin by lying face down on the ground. With your legs extended and together, the tops of your feet should be touching the floor. Place the palms of your hands firmly on the ground and underneath your shoulders.
2) Raising the torso. Get ready for that deep breath in! As you inhale, lift your back up by using your back muscles. Your hands are there to support you but shouldn’t carry all the weight. Your back should be curved and the rest of your body should be low to the ground. Breathe into the heart.
3) Mimicking the cobra. To get all the benefits of this yoga pose, you have to get into character. Proud and fearless, expand your chest and try to reach the ceiling with your head to lengthen the body. Snakes are limbless; so don’t wholly rely on your arms to keep the torso up. The spine should be extended by the abdomen and your back muscles.
4) Hold this position for up to 30 seconds. Exhale, as you release back to the ground. Bring your arms by your sides, turn your head to one side, and relax.
Cobra pose benefits the back, abdominal organs and can help with asthma. What I really like the most is the boost of energy that follows. The pose opens the chest and lungs, allowing energy and oxygen to flow. There’s nothing more refreshing than a good, deep breath in.
